This website highlights multiple links between Western minimalism and Balinese gamelan gong kebyar using American minimalist composer Steve Reich’s “Piano Phase” and Balinese gamelan gong keybar piece “Manuk Rawa” by composer I Wayan Beratha as examples. These links are important because texture serves as an important role in detecting elements of the piece while tempo maintains the rhythm. Texture serves as an important role in developing complexity in music. On the other hand, a piece’s tempo serves as a constant that performers must follow in order to sound cohesive. Despite the regional differences, both styles of music have many remarkable similarities in terms of how they treat musical elements. Each piece utilizes polyphonic texture and the fluctuation of tempo in a similar method to the respective other genre of music.
